Girl in Need of a Tourniquet: Memoir of a Borderline Personality

by Merri Lisa Johnson

So many are fascinated by borderline personality due to the destructive and histrionic natures that can appear from the disorder, and the confusion in those who love them. This book offers an inside look of how it can feel for someone with the disorder, helping to increase understanding.

Published by Seal Press in 2010, Girl in Need of a Tourniquet is Merri Lisa Johnson's memoir of living with borderline personality disorder, written from inside the experience rather than about it from a clinical distance. The book moves between personal narrative and clinical explanation of BPD, using an intentionally fragmented, experimental style — shifting fonts, spacing, song lyrics, and literary quotations — to mirror the emotional dysregulation the book describes.

The memoir centers on Johnson's relationships, most significantly an intense affair with a woman she calls Emily, and traces her path from her twenties through a period of instability toward eventually seeking treatment. It's less a linear "before and after" recovery story than an attempt to render what BPD feels like from inside it — critics have described the structure as deliberately chaotic, closer to the experience of a panic attack than a conventional narrative arc.

Content note: this book deals directly and explicitly with self-harm, disordered eating, addiction, and volatile relationships. It's a worthwhile read for its honesty, but worth knowing going in if any of those subjects are difficult territory for you right now.

I'd recommend it to readers interested in memoir as a genre, mental health and BPD specifically, or queer memoir (it's been reviewed and discussed in LGBTQ literary contexts). Reception has been mixed on execution — some reviewers found the experimental structure and interspersed clinical passages disjointed rather than illuminating — so it's a better fit for readers drawn to raw, unconventional nonfiction than for those wanting a tightly structured narrative.
